Local Events Danielle Gladding & Alison Kanter September 28, 2026
Danielle Gladding has lived downtown and on Golden Gate Point, a short walk from this stretch of bayfront, and is a member of the Sarasota Yacht Club, whose basin sits just across the water. She arrived in Sarasota in 1976, has been a licensed Florida Realtor since 1981 and a broker since 1987, and runs Danielle Gladding & Co. Realty with her daughter Alison Kanter, who was born and raised here.
Here is the short version of The Bay: it is a free, 53-acre public park on city-owned land along Sarasota Bay, open every day from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., and almost everything that happens in it costs nothing. Yoga on the lawn. Kayak tours through the mangroves. Concerts on Sunday evenings. Movies under the stars. A playground shaped like a giant ibis. You can spend a whole Saturday here and never open your wallet, unless you want a coffee from The Nest.
And this October it turns four. One Park FOUR All runs from October 1 to November 1, 2026, with more than 70 free events.
The Bay sits on the downtown Sarasota bayfront, north of Marina Jack and along the Boulevard of the Arts, wrapping around the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The address is 1055 Boulevard of the Arts. The land belongs to the City of Sarasota. The park is designed, built and run by The Bay Park Conservancy, a nonprofit set up in 2019 as the city's partner on the project.
It is being built in phases, and that matters for what you will find when you visit:
For the history of the ground under all of this, including how the city dredged and filled its own bayfront in the late 1950s, see our story on Marina Jack and the making of the Sarasota bayfront.
The Conservancy says The Bay hosts more than 800 free events a year, and every program in the park is free. Most need a quick free registration through Eventbrite, which is how the park keeps kayak tours and classes from overfilling. Here is what is on the menu.
Namaste at the Bay puts a different yoga teacher on the lawn at each session, with the bay behind you. The fitness lineup also runs Mat Pilates, Bootcamp, Tai Chi and Primetime+. Bring a mat and water, and get there early on a cool morning in season, because the good spots near the water go first.
Ride & Paddle offers free guided kayak tours and rentals from the park's paddle launch, which is ADA-accessible and opens straight into the bayou and the bay. Kayaks and life jackets are provided. Spots are limited and registration opens ahead of time, so plan a few weeks out. If you have only ever seen Sarasota Bay from a car on the Ringling Bridge, this is the fix.
Sundays at The Bay brings a different performer every week. Pack a blanket or a low chair, pick a spot on the Common Ground lawns, and watch the sun drop behind the bay while someone plays. It is one of the easiest good evenings in Sarasota.
Movies under the stars, on the lawn, free. Check the calendar for the title, bring something soft to sit on, and bug spray on a still night.
Dance at The Bay runs Latin dance, Zumba and other sessions on the lawn. No partner and no experience required, and nobody is judging.
The tree-shaded Mangrove Bayou Walkway is the part of The Bay most people fall for first. It winds through the mangroves right at the water's edge, and early morning is when the birds are out. Keep walking and you reach the Fountain Garden, the outdoor Reading Room and the Sunset Deck.
The Ibis Playground is built around a larger-than-life ibis, the white wading bird you will see picking through the grass all over Sarasota. It sits beside the lawns, so it is easy to combine with a picnic or a concert.
Paths loop through the park and connect south along the bayfront toward Marina Jack. The Conservancy publishes a downloadable guide for walking, jogging and cycling at your own pace. Leashed, friendly dogs are welcome.
The Nest is the park's concession pavilion, serving coffee, drinks and meals. It is the one thing here that costs money, and it is a good place to wait out an afternoon shower.
The Bay opened in October 2022, and the Conservancy says more than 1.2 million visits have followed. To mark four years it is running One Park FOUR All from October 1 to November 1, 2026, with more than 70 free events. The anchor events, as announced in September 2026:
Dates and details can change with the weather, so check The Bay's calendar before you go.
For anyone living downtown, The Bay has quietly become the backyard. The condominium towers along the bayfront and around The Quay and the Boulevard of the Arts sit a short walk from the lawns, and Golden Gate Point is just south across the water. A morning yoga class, a paddle through the mangroves and a Sunday concert are all walkable from those addresses.
Danielle lived on Golden Gate Point, and the walk was the point. "What was so great about it was that you could walk downtown," she says. "Before The Quay was there, we still used to walk over to that area because it was so beautiful. Now there's just so much to offer, which makes it that much better for people living there."
Of the two parks on the downtown bayfront, she gives The Bay the edge for things to do. "Downtown is really, really special. Now you've got Bayfront Park if you want to go toward Marina Jack, or you've got The Bay if you want to go kayaking or do yoga. They both have yoga. But there's more entertainment at The Bay, and that's a real addition to downtown."
The phases matter here too. A permanent public park on the bay is something no building can create for itself, and construction on later phases will bring noise, fencing and changed routes for a while yet. Anyone weighing a bayfront condominium should ask what is scheduled next and where before choosing a building. For the wider picture of the neighborhood, see our downtown Sarasota neighborhood page, and for the other end of the bayfront, the Sarasota Yacht Club's first hundred years.
Just south along the same waterfront, Bayfront Park at Marina Jack has the 26-foot Unconditional Surrender statue, the Dolphin Fountain and a pirate-shipwreck playground, and it is free too. If a day at The Bay sounds good, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens sits a little further south on the same bayfront, and the streets around Five Points are an easy walk inland for lunch.
